The Battle for Landmark Status is Over for Prentice Women’s Hospital in Chicago

Prentice can’t be saved from destruction.

In a standing-room-only session at the Cook County Board meeting room, the commission voted unanimously 8-0 to deny recommending landmark status for Prentice.
The commission acted at the end of a four-hour meeting full of public comment with a bare minimum of discussion, only a few clarifying questions over less than five minutes, before the vote.

A hard-fought battle by preservationists proves futile in efforts to save Prentice Women’s Hospital from demolition. Thursday, February 7, the final decision was made to bring down the Bertrand Goldberg-design owned by Northwestern University.

The news, issued in a press release saying that the Chicago Commission on Landmarks rejected giving the vacant Streeterville building landmark status, was a disappointment to preservationists who fought to save the property for historical restoration.

The Tribune stated that the building does meet the necessary criterion for landmark status giving Northwestern University the official green light to continue with its plans of building a new medical research facility.

Preservation goes a long way to protect and maintain art, architecture, properties and communities. From recycling materials to reusing and repurposing objects, a sense of identity can be found in things from our past.

And in finding new ways to interpret old things one is bound to discover something new, something not seen on the first go around.

This month in Preservation, The Magazine of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Lisa Skolnik writes about a home, purchased by a Chicago couple, built by noted Chicago architect Edward Dart.

Destined for demolition, neighbors protested and Landmarks Illinois intervened to save the property.

With fresh eyes, a leap of faith, and an overhaul by Highland Park architect Richard Becker, the property earned a Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award from Landmarks Illinois in 2011 and an AIA Chicago 2012 Design Excellence Award this past October.

Chesler Receives $1.4 Million in Round 9 of The Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credits

The Chesler Group, Inc. is selected to receive $1.4 million in Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credits from the Ohio Department Services Agency ( known formerly as Ohio Department of Development ) for the complete interior and exterior rehabilitation of the historic Carlisle Block Building in Downtown Chillicothe, Ohio. This is the fourth award for The Chesler Group, Inc. all in different Ohio counties: Geauga, Summit and Trumbull and now, Ross County.

The $8 million renovation of The Carlisle will restore the circa 1885 Romanesque four-story condemned building which was partially destroyed by arson in 2003. Without the Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credits, the rehabilitation of The Carlisle Block Building would not be possible. Restoration of The Carlisle will create a “mini-stimulus” for the region and will change the fabric of Downtown Chillicothe by restoring the Crown Jewel of its Historic Business District.

The Carlisle will be redeveloped in partnership with the Adena Health System and the Chillicothe-Ross Community Foundation. The building will be primarily used to house Adena’s medical residents.

The Chesler Group, Inc., the 2012 winner of the National Trust for Historic Preservation Award, for it’s ASM project, continues to redevelop projects across the state and nationwide.

The Chesler Group, Inc. is anticipating renovation of the Carlisle to begin in Spring/Summer 2013.
